What is HDR Photography

HDR photography is a method widely used in capturing real estate images. But do you know what it is? What does HDR stand for? How do we do it? Well, Id love to share that knowledge with you! In this blog, we will go over what HDR is and why its the best method to use when photographing real estate.

Firstly, what does HDR stand for? It stands for high dynamic range. Our eyes are known for having a very high dynamic range which allows us to see details in both shadows and highlights. Why is this important in real estate, you might ask? I think we all know that people LOVE scrolling through Zillow whether they’re in the market or not. For those that are in the market, when they go tour the home and its nothing like the photos they saw online, they’re often left disappointed in the home buying experience. HDR photography allows for the most true to life visuals of a listing.

Now that we understand what HDR is, how do we use it to get such accurate images? We use a setting in our cameras called bracketing. This allows us to take 3 consecutive photos; all at different exposures (normal, over exposed and under exposed). If you’ve ever wondered how we get those crystal clear views out of the windows while maintaining the details in the room, well its the under-exposed bracket that does the heavy lifting there! Once properly blended together in photoshop, these 3 images come together to give you a finished product that is well lit and as accurate to real life as it gets.

I think all agents want to avoid that post showing disappointment. When looking for a real estate photographer, make sure to ask if they do HDR photography.
